Complete Bachianas Brasileiras (Naxos) - Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Kenneth Schermerhorn, conductor

Category:

Conductor Kenneth Schermerhorn didn't quite finish his recording of the complete Bachianas Brasileiras before his death in 2005.  His excellent versions of BB #2-9 with the Nashville Symphony and soloists Jose Feghali (piano), Rosana Lamosa (soprano), Anthony La Marchina (cello), Erik Gratton (flute), and Cynthia Estill (bassoon) are here on this very well-received Naxos 3 CD-set.  Andrew Mogrelia was brought in to complete the set with BB #1 showing off the excellent Nashville Cellos.

Naxos provides their usual very high quality product in terms of the music, the sound and the packaging.  Also, as is often the case, this Naxos product fills a hole in the current discography, with the Villa-Lobos par lui-meme set more than showing its age in terms of sound, and some other more recent sets not always easily available.

Of special interest to the Villa-Lobos specialist, this recording replaces traditional "fixes" to the scores of these works with a careful look at the original manuscripts.  Villa was notoriously lax when it came to proofing the work of his copyists, and over the years many accretions to the scores have made their way into orchestral performances.

Here's a post from the Villa-Lobos Magazine, from back in February 2004, during the period when the NSO was rehearsing the Bachianas.
