Villa-Lobos Conducts the Violoncello Society

This LP is one of my top candidates for re-issue on CD. There is no CD version of the Fantasia Concertante for Orchestra of Violoncellos, though some of the Bach transcriptions are available on CD.

Villa-Lobos wrote the Fantasia Concertante in 1958. The Violoncello Society gave its world premiere at Town Hall in New York on December 10, 1958, and soon after made this recording. That seems to have been the last time it's shown up on record, and I haven't heard of any live performances in the next fifty years, which is surprising considering the popularity of Bachianas Brasileiras #1 and #5.

Update: I knew this was too good a piece for cellists to miss out on. Nicholas Anderson, vice president of the Violoncello Society, Inc., let me know about a number of performances from 1967 to 2006. The most exciting news from Nick's email is that a DVD is being put together of a performance of the Fantasia Concertante that was featured in the 50th Anniversary Gala at the 92nd Street Y. I will put together a story on this amazing work for this site real soon that includes all of Nick's new information. In the meantime, check out the new website of the Violoncello Society .
