"This work is the Premiere Suite Suggestive (Cinemas), for soprano, baritone and chamber ensemble (which includes three metronomes). The work alludes to the cinema of the time, both in the 'silliness' of its music and in its thematic content. It consists of seven movements which depict 'cinema scenes.' Each movement has two titles, one descriptive of the "plot," and the other describing its position in the cinema programme: Prelude, Choral et Funebre (Cine Journal), and Chariot Aviateur (Comique), for example. The programme note for the first public performance of this work tells us that the Suite creates 'an atmosphere of modern life . . . and the sonorous sensation of Cinematography,' and goes on to say that Villa-Lobos adored the cinema above all other forms of entertainment: 'He feels keenly the pleasure of its violent contrasts, and its constant virtuosity is well known to him.'"
