"...I was totally unprepared for the range and visionary quality of his a cappella output....  This disc is an essential acquisition for anyone interested in Villa-Lobos, and an unreserved recommendation for anyone with half-way open ears." - Guy Rickards, Tempo, New Series, No. 186 (Sep., 1993), pp. 48-49

Heitor Villa Lobos - Cancoes de Cordialidade, Poesias de Manuel Bandeira

Category:

"I found it inside an old encyclopedia and I cannot remember who had the great idea of hiding a Villa Lobos single inside a book. Anyway, I hope he gets a brand new life at Loronix after being inside a book across decades." - from the Loronix blog

This isn't likely to ever be re-issued on CD.  It's great to have it available on the web, thanks to the great Loronix blog.  I expect the disc originated some time in the 1960s.

In the New York Times, Richard Traubner gives a positive review:

Villa-Lobos: Magdalena
Judy Kaye, George Rose, Faith Esham, Kevin Gray, Jerry Hadley, vocalists; Connecticut Choral Artists; Orchestra New England conducted by Evans Haile. CBS MK 44945; CD and cassette.

Set in Colombia in 1912, this lush and ambitious folk operetta of 1948 lasted barely three months in an opulent stage production at the Ziegfeld Theater, but its haunting score is a perfect candidate for recorded posterity. The jungle richness is frequently overripe, as are the bizarre plot (mixing emeralds with religion) and some of the lyrics, but this is a work so utterly different from the usual 1940's musical that it cannot help but intrigue. Judy Kaye stands out in a well-chosen crossover cast of opera and Broadway names, and Evans Haile seems at home in this rain forest of steamy, tropical but often lovely orchestrations. The notes by Villa-Lobos's collaborators, Robert Wright and George Forrest, now represented on Broadway with ''Grand Hotel,'' are fascinating. - Richard Traubner

Instrumental and Orchestral Works (EMI Classics)

This is one of the best bargains in Villa-Lobos CDs.  A-list orchestras and conductors perform some of Villa's best works, with top soloists.  Angel Romero is a fine soloist in the Guitar Concerto, and John Harle is likewise stellar in the Fantasia for Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra.  Cristina Ortiz also shines in Bachianas Brasileiras #3, perhaps Villa's greatest work for piano and orchestra.  Ortiz fills out the set nicely with some solo piano pieces.  It's also nice to hear the Momoprecoce, a fantasy for piano & orchestra based on the solo piano pieces Carnaval das crianças.

Yerma (Santa Fe Opera)

Category:

Normally the discs that show up here are from commercial companies, available from the usual online sources such as Amazon.com.  There's been no commercial recording of Yerma, though, so we have to make do with this overheard recording of the groundbreaking production by Santa Fe Opera on August 12, 1971.

The sound is not great, but the singing is excellent.  This is pretty much your only chance to hear this important work by Villa-Lobos.  I believe that this work, with its strong libretto (from the play by Garcia Lorca) and impressive music, deserves at least an occasional hearing on the world's operatic stages.

Reviews:

Lisa Peppercorn discusses the Santa Fe production in some detail in her article "Villa-Lobos's Stage Works", Revue belge de Musicologie / Belgisch Tijdschrift voor Muziekwetenschap, Vol. 36, (1982 - 1984), pp. 175-184.  It's a fascinating story.  Peppercorn quotes the producer Basil Langton:

"...the work appeals to the audience, juding from the heavy applause... another advantage is its relatively easy staging without scenic changes.  This may well help the opera to be represented in other places as well." (p. 183)

Time Magazine's review of the Santa Fe production praised the work and the performances, but not the staging.

Villa-Lobos Piano Music (Brzezinska)

Category:

The past few years have provided a bumper crop of excellent Villa-Lobos piano CDs.  The Polish-born, Swiss-resident pianist Joanna Brzezinska-Maurer weighs in with a very well-played and well-recorded disc that includes both suites from A Prole do Bebê.

The disc also includes a nice relaxed performance of the early Suite Floral, and a novelty that's a real eye-opener: the Choros #1 for guitar arranged for piano.  This piece translates well; the result on the piano reminds one of Ernesto Nazareth.  Sonia Rubinsky includes the arrangement (by Odmar Amaral Gurgel) in the third volume of her complete cycle on Naxos.  Rubinsky's version is more rugged than the polished version on this Claves recording; I love listening to both.

You can listen to a long sample from Brzezinska-Maurer's Choros #1 on her website here - along with portions of other pieces from the CD.

The Pleeth Cello Octet play Villa-Lobos

Category:

The original 1993 disc on Hyperion was always one of my favourites, but it was getting hard to find. I'm so pleased that it's been re-issued on Helios, at mid-price, and easily found in online stores.

Both Bachianas performances are great, but the real reason to check out this disc is to hear the relatively rarely performed Suite for Voice and Violin. I also really enjoy the Preludes and Fugues, as arranged by their greatest fan, Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Information from the Hyperion website:

The excellent album cover picture is Tropical Storm with Tiger by Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) - Reproduced by permission of The Trustees, The National Gallery, London

Recording details: May 1987
All Hallows, Gospel Oak, London, United Kingdom
Produced by Mark Brown
Engineered by Tony Faulkner

The front and back CD pictures, the superb liner notes by Simon Wright, and the original lyrics and translations are included in this PDF.  There are also 30 second MP3 sound clips of each track. What an excellent website!  Congrats to Hyperion.
