  • In South America.  See Silvina Luz Mansilla's article "Heitor Villa-Lobos en Buenos Aires durante la década de 1920: Modernismo, recepción y campo musical", Per musi: Revista acadêmica de música, v16, pp42-53, Jul-Dec 2007.
  • Feb. 18: at an important concert at the Theatro Sant'Anna in Sao Paulo, the Nonetto is performed.
  • June 1: an important concert in Buenos Aires, including Choros #02, the Quatuor, and the Dancas africanas.
  • Villa-Lobos's membership in the Société Internationale de Musique Contemporaine is sponsored by Albert Roussel.

  • In Paris for most of the year.
  • Villa meets Andres Segovia for the first time, at a party in Paris given by Olga de Moraes Sarmento.  Segovia tells the story in "I meet Villa-Lobos," Guitar Review, no. 22, 1958, pp. 22-23.
  • Conducts his own music in Lisbon in March and Brussels in April.
  • May 30: an important concert of Villa's works is given at the Salle des Agriculteurs by Arthur Rubinstein, Vera Janacopulos, and Joao de Souza Lima.  The programme includes Quatuor symbolique, Prole do Bebe #1, Epigrammas ironicos, Pensees d'Enfant, and the Nonetto.
  • Villa returns to Brazil in October.

  • Leopold Stokowski visits Rio de Janeiro. See the fascinating story at Daniella Thompson's fabulous website Stalking Stokowski. Villa-Lobos helps the visiting conductor hook up with popular music greats Donga, Cartola, Zé Espinguela and Pixinguinha.
  • April: Opera Izaht opens in Rio
  • Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra tour Brazil

  • On Independence Day (September 7), Villa-Lobos conducts 30,000 school children singing patriotic and folk songs arranged by the composer.
  • Premiere of the piano version of Bachianas Brasileiras #4, on 27 November, 1939, in Rio de Janeiro, with José Vieira Brandão. At the same concert, Brandão also played the premieres of other piano works including Valsa da dor and pieces from the Guia pratico.

  • Meets Canadian composer Claude Champagne in Rio, where the two present a joint concert in 1946.
  • Death of Villa's mother Noemia Umbelina Villa-Lobos.
  • Premiere of the First Piano Concerto, performed in Rio de Janeiro by the Canadian pianist Ellen Ballon, who commissioned the work. Villa-Lobos conducted.
