The text is by Viriato Correa, and the music is by "Epaminondas Villalba Filho" - a pseudonym of Villa-Lobos.

This work refers to the Brazilian independence martyr Tiradentes. See this post at The Villa-Lobos Magazine.

Villa-Lobos: Sua Obra, 2009 lists the year of composition as 1939, but the score in Canto Orfeônico says "Rio 1938".

A canoa virou

This short (4 min.) piece for band is based on Guia Pratico vol. 1, no. 23. A Canoa Virou (O barco virou) is an anonymous melody arranged by Villa-Lobos.  The same tune is used in Cirandinhas #10.
