Latin American wind chamber music for oboe: An annotated bibliography
by Walker, John Lowell, D.M.A., The University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 1995, 332 pages; AAT 9609438
Abstract (Summary)

Some years ago the author was faced with the challenge of presenting a program of Latin American music for wind quintet. Cursory research at that time revealed a surprisingly large body of works of which only the Villa-Lobos Quintette en forme de choros is apparently within the standard repertory for that ensemble. Curiosity about the full extent and nature of Latin American chamber music for the oboe led to this survey.

Abstract (Summary)

This essay provides the historical background, formal and harmonic analyses, comparisons between the Fantasia Concertante and the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 and Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, and a discussion of the suggested fingerings and bowings. The fourteen "Serestas" of Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959)
by Sanchez, Noe, M.M., University of North Texas, 1999, 156 pages; AAT 1396395
Abstract (Summary)

The Fourteen Serestas of Heitor Villa-Lobos comprise a group of songs that expresses Villa-Lobos's compositional technique for the voice. These songs are challenging as a topic because not much historical or analytical research has been done on them.

I approach the topic by providing historical background on the modinha and how it relates to the seresta. This is followed by a descriptive analysis in the order of the set, which includes musical examples, chart diagrams, and comparisons of the serestas to other works.

Thesis: An analysis of the Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra by Heitor Villa-Lobos

Part 1. Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra (an original composition). Part 2. An analysis of the Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra by Heitor Villa-Lobos
by Engstrom, Gregory, Ph.D., Kent State University, 2000, 292 pages; AAT 9994552
Abstract (Summary)

The first part of the dissertation is an original composition for guitar and orchestra. This concerto is organized into three movements with the total duration of the work reaching approximately 20 minutes.

In 1951 the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos completed his "Concerto pour Guitare et petit orchestre." This is an important work in the guitars literature, yet the piece has rarely been subjected to an in-depth musical analysis. The second part of the dissertation presents such an analysis.
